How to Choose DBY/DCY Right Angle Gearbox with Backstop for Bucket Elevator

 2026-06-27| View:286

This guide is for informational purposes only. Always consult a qualified engineer for final selection.

We have worked with cement plants across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa on bucket elevator drive upgrades. One thing we keep hearing from plant engineers: "We didn't realize we needed a backstop until the first power outage spilled material everywhere."

Two problems show up together:

  1. Tight overhead space – the drive platform needs a compact layout

  2. Reverse rotation – when the motor stops, loaded buckets pull the head shaft backward

DBY/DCY series bevel-helical gear reducers solve both. They deliver right-angle output for space-saving installation and optional backstop for reverse rotation prevention.

Why Right Angle?

A parallel-shaft gearbox pushes the motor outward, making the platform larger and more expensive to build.

A right-angle bevel-helical gearbox keeps the motor parallel to the elevator casing. The output shaft connects directly to the head shaft at 90°. The platform stays compact.

Result: less steel, less fabrication, easier maintenance access.

Why Backstop?

When the motor stops, the weight of material in the ascending leg creates reverse torque. Without a backstop:

  • The elevator runs backward

  • Material spills into the boot section

  • Chains and buckets get damaged

  • Production stops for cleanup

A backstop—mounted on the high-speed input shaft—locks as soon as reverse rotation begins. It holds the load automatically. No operator action required.

Design Highlights

● Hardened and ground gearing – HRC 58–62

● Gleason spiral bevel gears – smooth, quiet first stage

● Four standard assembly types (I, II, III, IV)

● Backstop mounted on high-speed shaft, works in one rotational sense

Selection Steps

First, calculate the required ratio from motor speed and elevator speed.

Next, size by mechanical power:

P₁ ≥ P₂ × Kₐ × Sₐ

Where:

◆ P₁ = rated input power

◆ P₂ = power required by the elevator

◆ Kₐ = service factor (2.0 for heavy shock load H class, 24h continuous duty)

◆ Sₐ = safety factor (1.3–1.5 for general or important equipment, 1.5–1.7 for critical applications)

Then, check thermal capacity. Compare P₂ · f_w · f_A with P_G1. If P₂ · f_w · f_A > P_G1, add cooling coils or increase center distance.

Finally, specify the backstop. Always state the output shaft rotation direction (clockwise or counter-clockwise). The backstop only works in one direction.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Selecting a gearbox not rated for conveyor duty.

✅ Use DBY/DCY series. They meet JB/T 9002‑1999 specifically for conveyors.

❌ Ordering a backstop without rotation direction.

✅ Always state S (clockwise) or N (counter-clockwise).

❌ Ignoring ambient temperature.

✅ Check thermal ratings. Hot climates need extra cooling.

Case Studies

📍 Case Study: Raw Meal Bucket Elevator – Southeast Asia

Customer: Cement plant (1,200 TPD)
Challenge: Power interruptions caused reverse rotation, spilling material and damaging chains. Platform space was tight.
Solution: HelmeDrive DCY280-31.5 with backstop. Right-angle output reduced platform footprint.
✅ Result: Zero reverse rotation incidents in 6 months. No material spillage. Chain life extended.

📍 Case Study: Finished Cement Elevator – Middle East

Customer: Cement grinding plant
Challenge: No backstop. Grid sags caused the elevator to reverse and jam. Oil leakage was also an issue.
Solution: HelmeDrive DBY355-10 with integrated backstop. Hardened gears reduced noise. Sealing upgrade stopped leaks.
✅ Result: No reverse rotation. No oil leaks. Plant ordered a second unit within 12 months.

❓ FAQ

Q1: Can DBY/DCY gearboxes run in both directions?
A: Yes. But with a backstop fitted, they only run in the specified direction. State rotation direction when ordering.

Q2: Where is the backstop installed?
A: Standard mounting is on the high-speed input shaft.

Q3: What is the difference between DBY and DCY?
A: DBY is 2-stage (ratios 8–14). DCY is 3-stage (ratios 16–50). Choose DBY for lower ratios, DCY for higher. HelmeDrive offers both.

Q4: How do I know if I need cooling?
A: Compare
P₂ · f_w · f_A with P_G1. If P₂ · f_w · f_A > P_G1, add cooling coils or increase center distance.

Q5: Does the backstop need maintenance?
A: Yes – periodic inspection as part of routine maintenance. HelmeDrive provides guidelines and parts.
