چگونگی انتخاب گیربکس برای کارخانه سیمان ایران
If you are involved in cement production – whether for a new line or an existing line upgrade – you know that vertical mills, roller presses, and conveyors are the backbone of your operation. Each piece of equipment places very different demands on the gearbox that drives it.
Long lead times, high costs, and restricted access to spare parts have led many cement producers to look for reliable alternative solutions.
This guide gives you a clear, equipment-by-equipment selection path – based on actual torque, speed, and mounting requirements. No fluff. Just what you need to make an informed choice.
First, Understand the Three Core Applications
Application | Equipment | Drive Requirement | Typical Power Range |
Raw meal / cement grinding | Vertical roller mill | Horizontal motor to vertical output. High torque density. 90° turn. | 1 MW – 6 MW+ |
Clinker crushing / material bed grinding | Roller press | Extreme torque density. Left and right rolls driven independently. | 100 kW – 2,500 kW+ |
Clinker / cement conveying | Belt conveyor, chain conveyor, bucket elevator | High efficiency for long running hours. Right-angle for bucket elevators. | 5.5 kW – 200 kW |
Each requires a different gearbox design. Let’s go through them one by one.
Recommended Gearbox Series for Cement Plant Equipment
Application | Best Series | Key Parameters | Why This Series |
Vertical roller mill | Torque up to 2,600 kNm. Ratio 25–4000. Efficiency ≥97% (planetary stage) | Integrated bevel + planetary design. Converts horizontal input to vertical output in one unit. No external right-angle box.
Roller press | GTP series (planetary) | Torque up to 2,600 kNm. Ratio 25–4000. Hydraulic slow drive option for maintenance. | Modular planetary design. Independent drives for left and right rolls. Heavy-duty tapered roller bearings handle extreme radial loads. |
Belt / chain conveyor (horizontal) | Power 0.18–200 kW. Torque up to 18,500 Nm. Efficiency ≥95%. Hollow shaft option (GFH/GFHF). | Parallel shaft handles high radial load from belt tension. Hollow shaft slides directly onto conveyor head pulley – no coupling, no baseplate.
Bucket elevator (vertical) | DBY: ratio 8–14, center distance 160–560 mm. DCY: ratio 16–90, center distance 160–800 mm. Backstop optional. | Right-angle output saves vertical space. Designed specifically for conveyors and elevators. Backstop prevents reverse rotation.
Mixer / agitator | Power 0.12–200 kW. Ratio 1.4–270. Efficiency ≥95%. Flange mount (GRF) or extended bearing housing (GRM). | Coaxial design fits top-mounted installations. Flange bolts directly to tank cover. GRM version handles high overhung load. |
How to Select – Equipment by Equipment
Industry standard configuration: Bevel gear stage (90° turn) + planetary gear stage (torque multiplication) in one integrated gearbox.
HelmeDrive solution:GTP series– integrated bevel-planetary design. Input is horizontal, output is vertical, directly driving the mill table.
Sizing guide:
◆ Match GTP torque rating to mill table size and grinding pressure.
◆ Common range: 500 kNm to 2,600 kNm (approximately 1.2 MW to 6 MW).
◆ Ratio typically 25–50 for vertical mills.
What to avoid: Do not try to use a standard right-angle gearbox (K series) plus a separate planetary. The integrated design is more reliable and compact.
Industry standard configuration: Two independent planetary gearboxes – one for each roll. Hydraulic slow drive for maintenance positioning.
HelmeDrive solution: GTP series– modular planetary gearboxes with high torque density. Can be supplied as independent left and right units.
Sizing guide:
◆ Roller press torque typically ranges from 100 kNm to 2,250 kNm.
◆ GTP covers this range (up to 2,600 kNm).
◆ Output speed: 15–25 r/min → ratio approximately 60–100 (for 1,500 r/min motor).
◆ Specify hydraulic slow drive for roll positioning during maintenance.
What to avoid: Do not use parallel shaft gearboxes (ZY) unless space is not a constraint – they are much larger than planetary units for the same torque.
Industry standard configuration: Parallel shaft helical gearmotor, direct-mounted to head pulley.
HelmeDrive solution: F series – parallel shaft helical gearmotor. Preferred: hollow shaft version (GFH / GFHF) slides directly onto the conveyor shaft.
Sizing guide:
◆ Use F series for torque up to 18,500 Nm.
◆ For torque beyond 18,500 Nm, upgrade to ZY series.
◆ Ratio: 5–200, depending on belt speed.
◆ Efficiency ≥95% – critical for 24/7 conveyor operation.
Why hollow shaft: Eliminates coupling and baseplate. Saves axial space. Installation is simple – slide onto shaft, secure with shrink disk, add torque arm.
What to avoid: Do not use worm gear (RV or S series) for long conveyors – efficiency is too low (50-89%), energy cost will be significant.
Industry standard configuration: Right-angle gearbox with backstop to prevent reverse rotation when stopped.
HelmeDrive solution: DBY/DCY series– bevel-helical right-angle gearbox. Specify backstop option.
Sizing guide:
◆ DBY (two-stage): ratio 8–14, for lighter elevators.
◆ DCY (three-stage): ratio 16–90, for taller elevators.
◆ Backstop is mandatory – prevents the loaded elevator from running backward when stopped.
What to avoid: Do not use a right-angle gearbox without a backstop. The elevator will reverse under load – dangerous and damaging.
Industry standard configuration: Coaxial helical gearmotor, flange-mounted directly on top of the mixing tank.
HelmeDrive solution: R series – coaxial helical gearmotor. Flange mount (GRF type) bolts directly to tank cover. GRM type has extended bearing housing for high overhung load.
Sizing guide:
◆ Power: 0.12–200 kW.
◆ Ratio: 10–100 for typical agitator speeds.
◆ Efficiency ≥95%.
What to avoid: Do not use a right-angle gearbox (K series) unless the motor must be mounted on the side – coaxial is simpler and more efficient.
Local Considerations – Climate and Power Grid
Cement plants in different regions operate in very different conditions. The standard gearbox configuration may need adjustments.
Region | Climate | Recommended Configuration |
Southern coastal areas | Summer >45°C, high humidity, salt spray | Cooling fan or cooling coil. PAO synthetic oil (ISO VG 220). Anti-corrosion paint coating. |
Central plateau | Summer 40–45°C, dry, dusty | Cooling fan. Dust-resistant seals. Standard oil is acceptable but synthetic recommended. |
Extreme high temperature areas | Summer >50°C | Forced lubrication + cooling coil. PAO synthetic oil mandatory. |
All regions | Grid fluctuations possible | IE3 or IE4 high-efficiency motor. VFD recommended for smooth start and grid protection. |
Supply chain note: Sea freight to the main southern port takes 22–28 days. Spare parts can be shipped directly. Remote video technical support is available.
Key Selection Constraints
⚠️ Axial load limitation – For F, R, and DBY/DCY series: the output shaft cannot bear axial load. For vertical mills (GTP), axial thrust from the grinding table must be absorbed by the mill’s own thrust bearing – do not let it push against the gearbox output shaft.
⚠️ Radial load verification – For belt or chain drives, calculate radial load using Fr = 2 × Mr × fr / d (N). Compare with FRa in selection tables. For hollow shaft mounting (F series), radial load is minimal.
⚠️ Thermal power verification – Cement plant equipment runs 24/7. For high ambient temperatures, you must check thermal power rating. Use our technical data. Send us your site conditions.
⚠️ Backstop for bucket elevators – DBY/DCY series can be ordered with a backstop. Without it, the elevator can reverse under load – this is not a gearbox failure, it is a missing feature.
⚠️ Lubrication – Standard mineral oil works from -10°C to +40°C. For southern coastal areas, use PAO synthetic oil (ISO VG 220). Confirm mounting position (M1–M6) when ordering – oil level changes with orientation.
Motor & Drive Configuration for Cement Plants
Item | Recommendation | Why |
Motor efficiency | IE3 or IE4 for continuous duty | Cement plants run 24/7 – energy savings pay back quickly |
VFD | Recommended for roller presses and mills | Smooth start, reduces mechanical shock, protects against grid fluctuations |
Brake / Backstop | Mandatory for bucket elevators | Prevents reverse rotation under load |
Enclosure | IP55 for indoor, IP65 for dusty/wet areas | Protects against cement dust and moisture |
Ambient temperature | -10°C to +40°C standard. Outside this range, contact us | Southern coastal areas require cooling and synthetic oil |
Mounting | Hollow shaft (F series) for conveyors; flange mount (R series) for mixers | Simplifies installation, saves space |
Common Mistakes We Have Seen
❌ Using a worm gear (RV or S series) for long conveyors – Efficiency is only 50-89%. For a 50kW conveyor running 24/7, the extra energy cost is significant. Use F series (≥95% efficiency).
❌ Forgetting backstop on bucket elevators – When stopped, the loaded elevator can run backward. The gearbox will not hold it without a backstop. Always specify backstop on DBY/DCY for elevators.
❌ Ignoring thermal power in southern coastal areas – A gearbox sized correctly for mechanical power may overheat in summer. Add cooling fan or cooling coil.
❌ Using standard oil in extreme heat – Mineral oil loses viscosity above 40°C. Switch to PAO synthetic oil (ISO VG 220) for southern and central areas.
✅ Correct approach – Match gearbox series to the equipment. Add climate-specific options (cooling, synthetic oil, corrosion protection). Verify thermal power. Use VFD for smooth start.

FAQ
Q1: Why choose GTP series for vertical mill instead of using separate bevel box + planetary?
A: Integration. GTP series combines bevel and planetary stages in one housing – fewer seals, less alignment work, higher reliability. Separate units add two couplings and extra mounting points.
Q2: Can F series hollow shaft be used on any conveyor head pulley?
A: Yes, as long as the pulley shaft diameter matches the hollow bore. Provide your shaft diameter, we select the correct GFH size. Torque arm is required to prevent housing rotation.
Q3: Does DBY/DCY series come with a backstop?
A: Yes, it is an option. For bucket elevators, you must specify backstop when ordering. Standard DBY/DCY units do not include it.
Q4: What is the lead time for GTP or F series to the region?
A: To the main southern port takes 22–28 days. Production lead time: 4–6 weeks for standard configurations. Total approximately 8–10 weeks.
Q5: Can I use standard mineral oil in southern coastal areas?
A: Not recommended. Mineral oil loses viscosity above 40°C. Use PAO synthetic oil (ISO VG 220) for southern coastal areas. It maintains viscosity at 45-50°C and extends oil change intervals.
