Why Does a Single Screw Extruder Need a Dedicated Thrust Bearing Gearbox?

 2026-08-18| View:302

This guide is for informational purposes only. Always consult a qualified engineer for final selection.

We have worked with plastics extrusion plant engineers and maintenance managers across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America. One question we keep hearing when they replace a failed extruder gearbox: “Why can’t we just use a standard helical gearbox instead of a dedicated extruder gearbox?”

The answer is simple: a single screw extruder generates massive axial thrust during operation. The plastic material is forced through the barrel, and the screw acts like a giant auger, pushing forward with forces that can reach hundreds of kilonewtons. A standard gearbox — even a heavy-duty one — is not designed to absorb this thrust. The bearings will fail. The gear teeth will misalign. The gearbox will break.

For plastics extrusion lines, a plastic extruder gearbox must handle both torque and thrust — two demands that standard industrial gearboxes are not built to meet.

Three problems show up together in every single screw extruder drive application:

1. High axial thrust – the screw pushes material forward under high pressure; standard gearboxes cannot absorb this

2. Frequent screw changes – material and profile changes require quick screw removal; standard couplings are too slow

3. 24/7 continuous operation – production lines run without stopping; heat buildup kills standard gearboxes

ZLYJ series extruder gearboxesare built specifically for this duty. They feature built-in large-capacity thrust bearings, hollow output shafts with spline couplings, and thermal capacity ratings that match the continuous operation of extrusion lines.

Why Standard Gearboxes Cannot Handle Extruder Thrust

A standard helical gear reducer is designed to transmit torque — not to absorb axial thrust. The bearings in a standard gearbox are sized for the radial loads from belt or coupling drives, plus minor axial loads from helical gear thrust. They are not designed for the continuous, high-magnitude axial force generated by a single screw extruder.

The problem: The screw acts like a giant auger, pushing plastic material forward through the barrel. This creates an axial reaction force that transfers directly to the gearbox output shaft. In a standard gearbox, this force pushes against bearings that were never designed for it.

The result: Bearing failure, gear misalignment, tooth wear, and ultimately gearbox failure — often within months.

Unlike a standard extruder gear reducer, ZLYJ integrates thrust bearings directly into the output shaft path. These bearings are specifically sized and positioned to absorb the screw thrust, protecting the gear train and extending gearbox life.

Screw thrust range reference: A typical 90 mm diameter screw at 26 MPa operating pressure generates approximately 165 kN of axial thrust. Larger screws (150–165 mm) can generate 500–590 kN. The ZLYJ series thrust bearings are sized to handle these forces under rated operating conditions for extended service life.

What Makes ZLYJ Different — The Design Features

Built-in thrust bearing package

The defining feature of the ZLYJ series is the large-format thrust bearing assembly integrated into the output section. This is not an add-on or an option — it is part of the gearbox design. The thrust bearing absorbs the screw's axial force directly, preventing it from reaching the gear train or the input bearings. As a dedicated extrusion gearbox, ZLYJ is engineered specifically for the unique demands of screw extrusion.

Hollow output shaft with spline coupling

The ZLYJ series features a hollow output shaft with a splined internal bore. This allows the extruder screw to slide directly into the gearbox output without a coupling. For screw changes, the operator simply withdraws the screw from the barrel, slides it back into the gearbox, and locks it in place. No realignment. No coupling bolts. No wasted hours.

Hardened and ground gearing (HRC 58–62)

ZLYJ gears are case-hardened and precision-ground to HRC 58–62 with Grade 6 accuracy. This provides the tooth strength and surface durability required for 24/7 extrusion duty — where continuous operation and steady loads demand long-term reliability.

Thermal capacity matched to continuous operation

Single screw extruders run continuously — often for weeks at a time without stopping. Heat buildup in the gearbox is a real concern. ZLYJ series gearboxes are designed with thermal capacity ratings that match the continuous duty cycle of extrusion lines. For demanding applications, cooling coils are available to maintain oil temperature within operating limits.

Use R/F/K series instead

Choose a single screw extruder gearbox like ZLYJ when:

◆ You are driving a single screw extruder for pipe, profile, sheet, or compounding

◆ The screw generates axial thrust that requires dedicated thrust bearing support

◆ You need quick screw changes without realigning couplings

◆ Your line runs 24/7 and requires thermal capacity verification

◆ You want a gearbox designed specifically for extrusion — not a modified general-purpose unit

Selection Steps for Single Screw Extruder Drives

First, determine the required output speed based on the extruder screw diameter and the material being processed. Most single screw extruders operate in the 60–120 rpm range at the screw. With a 4-pole motor at 1,500 rpm, the

required ratio typically falls in the 12.5–20 range.

Next, calculate the required output torque. This depends on screw diameter, material type (PVC, PE, PP, ABS), and operating pressure. For pipe and profile extrusion, torque requirements vary significantly — consult the ZLYJ

selection tables for exact ratings based on your specific material and screw geometry. For high torque extruder gearbox applications, verify both thrust and thermal capacity in addition to torque ratings.

Then, verify axial thrust capacity. The ZLYJ series thrust bearing ratings are matched to specific frame sizes and screw diameters. For a 90 mm screw at 26 MPa, the thrust is approximately 165 kN. For larger screws (150–165

mm), thrust can reach 500–590 kN — confirm against the ZLYJ selection data for your specific frame size.

Finally, verify thermal capacity. Extrusion lines run 24/7. Confirm that the gearbox thermal rating meets your continuous duty requirement. For high-output applications, cooling coils may be recommended — contact our technical

team to verify against your specific operating conditions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Using a standard helical gearbox on a single screw extruder — it cannot absorb the axial thrust.

✅ Choose ZLYJ series with built-in thrust bearings specifically designed for extruder duty.

❌ Using a solid shaft coupling on the extruder screw — screw changes take hours.

✅ Specify ZLYJ hollow output shaft with spline coupling for quick screw changes.

❌ Ignoring thermal capacity on 24/7 extrusion lines — heat kills gearboxes.

✅ Verify thermal capacity and specify cooling coils if needed for your application.

❌ Treating extruder duty as “just another conveyor” — it is not.

✅ Recognize that extruder gearboxes are specialized equipment with unique thrust and cooling requirements.

📍 Case Studies

Case Study: PVC Pipe Extrusion – Southeast Asia

Customer: Pipe extrusion plant in Vietnam

Challenge: The existing standard helical gearbox failed every 8–10 months due to bearing failure from extruder thrust. Each failure cost 3–4 days of production downtime. Screw changes required 4–6 hours of coupling realignment.

Solution: HelmeDrive replaced the failed unit with a ZLYJ series extruder gearbox with built-in thrust bearings and hollow output shaft with spline coupling.

✅ Result: No bearing failures in 24 months. Screw changes reduced to 45 minutes. The plant standardized ZLYJ for all extrusion lines.

Case Study: Profile Extrusion – Turkey

Customer: PVC profile extrusion plant in Turkey

Challenge: Frequent gearbox failures on a 55 kW profile extrusion line. Oil temperatures exceeded 95°C during summer months. Standard cooling was insufficient.

Solution: HelmeDrive supplied a ZLYJ series gearbox with cooling coils.

✅ Result: Oil temperature stabilized within operating limits. No gearbox failures in 18 months. The plant ordered ZLYJ units for two additional lines.
